Ey up guys. Feels like forever since last time I was here even though it’s only been 2 weeks. Mind you a lot has happened in those two weeks. I get home and my mum and sis are watching Designated Survivor, a show where someone blows up the Capitol building and kills the whole US Government. Then look on the news and find out about the Capitol Riots………anyway, I’m listening to While She Sleeps as I write this. Don’t know them? Black Clover Chapter 278 Discussion:
So first Jack is flinging Death Scythes at Dante which go through him like he got Mirio Togata’s phasing quirk. He explains how Morris’ experimentation improved his regenerative abilities to an insane level. We then get a full body shot showing a giant gash across his chest as he comments Only Anti-Magic can hurt me. Gee wonder where that wound could be from……Whilst observing Nacht contemplates their only chance at victory is to bank on Jack’s magic, but then Dante unleashes Gravity Magic: Presence of the Demon King which brings both Jack and Nacht to their knees.
Nacht summons one of his Devils, Slotos, and goes into Devil Union Mode: Equus, Characteristic: Toughness. It looks almost like Riot Shields appeared on his arms and similar items on his legs. Dante gazes in surprise as he turns up the Gravity crushing Jack to the floor. Nacht is surprised and somewhat mocks Jack with a tone of essentially Really? You’re a Captain and you’re taken out that easily?
As Nacht taunts Jack, Dante closes in and tries to take out Nacht, but his punch is blocked and he gets a kick to the belly for it. Dante ups the % of Devil Magic he is outputting and laughs mockingly as he tries to take out Jack.
We then go into a flashback (in a Shonen? well I never……) where we get Jack’s origin. His father was a hunter who always told Jack Don’t mess with anything that looks stronger than you. Sound advice, and so Jack only hunted creatures that were weaker than him. But it seems his father didn’t follow his own words and is later killed by a Bear when Jack was 13. Whilst he seems sad, it appears like Jack may have been “freed” when his dad died, as he went after something more powerful than him; the Bear that killed his father. He killed it and eventually joined the Magic Knights. It doesn’t say who, off the top of my head I’d go with Purple Orcas purely based off the fact they’re generally the biggest squad in terms of numbers.
Back to reality and Nacht again saves Jack. But as Nacht looks over he sees Jack isn’t doing nothing; he is growing tiny blades all over his body that are cutting through the Gravity in his immediate vicinity. He then launches himself at Dante like a human beyblade and unleashes slash after slash after slash. Dante seems uninterested. But then he sees a giant Praying Mantis as Jack manages to land a hit, drawing a lot of blood. Dante’s expression is essentially a shocked Pikachu face whilst Nacht admits he underestimated Jack.
So that was fun. It felt really short but it seems it was a few pages more than usual. So how did Jack land a hit? I’m guessing he managed to go faster than Dante’s regeneration could handle, though just how fast that is is hard to tell. But the backstory was nice, it wasn’t overly “tear-jerky” even if it did feature the death of a parent but did a good job of explaining why Jack is how he is. To be honest I thought Nacht’s Devil was a Bull at first due to the horns but then he said Equus and looking at the mask yeah that’s clearly a Horse. Just what it’s specific magic affinity is is hard to tell right now other than clearly a defensive kind. Dante getting his smugness handed to him again was hilarious, the guy really needs to stop underestimating the protagonists…….ah hubris, the Achilles heel of so many villains.
Black Clover Chapter 279 Spoilers & Predictions:
So we’ve seen all of the Dark Triad fight, all that’s left are the remaining captains versus various Dark Disciples. Whether they will take a whole chapter each or just cram all 3 into one is a 50/50 guess for me. They could easily make it last one chapter each but I doubt the Disciples are going to be difficult for any of Fuegoleon, Nozel or Dorothy.
If not those guys, it could be Sekke and Sally’s crew doing whatever they were ordered to do as clearly they aren’t fighting these guys. Maybe they have to sneak in and rescue Yami and William? Or perhaps some plot that could need them dismantling as much of the Triad Castle’s defences/weapons as much as they can. Or perhaps killing or recruiting Morris. Whatever it is I suspect it’ll turn out to be funny, imagining Sekke trying to handle Sally’s insanity would be hilarious
I think as this arc goes on we’ll see what Nacht’s other devils can do. I could see Jack being an Arcane Stage, he was able to harm Dante so it could be that there’s more to his magic affinity than meets the eye. Loropechika did say the Clover Kingdom had such an array of unusual magic because they were not so “in tune with the Mana of nature” or something like that (it was a while ago I can’t remember the specifics alright) so less elemental affinities appeared and more strange affinites manifested. And Slashing Magic is rather unique, so I could see this being confirmed either by one of the Dark Triad or Nacht later on.
Or who knows we may finally see Magna and Zora again………kidding. I can dream dammit it’s been nearly two years since we last saw them.
