While it is true that action anime succeed in most cases to take the full attention of the fans, other stories like sad anime have also managed to capture an audience and make them move to tears. Sometimes, instead of laughing, we want to weep or see something that moves the fibers of the heart. For those moments, we can always count on the tragedy, drama and sadness genre. here are 10 sad anime that could do the job.

10 best Sad anime series:

10. Angel Beasts :

best Sad Anime

Angel Beats tells the story of a group of teenage high school students, but with a unique scenario: the school actually serves as a place of passage for the souls of people who have passed away but cannot move on due to strong ties to loved ones or unfinished works in their lifetime. In other words, souls cannot rest in peace and leave the human world unless the learn how to give up life attachment or loved ones behind It sounds pretty sad, right?

As if that were not enough, the constant pain that the characters go through in the episodes makes Angel Beats an almost unbearable series to watch. Some mysteries of life and even of the afterlife of some of the characters are being unveiled and the friendship between them is getting closer – and trust me, this is also something that will make you suffer and definitely bring those hidding tears that you’ are hardly trying to not drop. To make matters worse, they are teenagers who were just starting their life, which makes it all the more tragic. If you feel like a supernatural drama and sad anime, Angel Beats is your best bet.

9.Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

best sad anime

For me, there is nothing better than harsh realism in a sad anime series. And that’s exactly one of the reasons why I love Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. it revolves around a rare theme in anime – the pain and destruction of a natural disaster. and how it affected the lives of innocent people. The show does a great job of portraying real-life tragedies and the struggle that the main characters have to face in order to survive a totally uncontrollable force.

The story follows Mirai and Yuuki Onozawa (the main protagonist) when they caught this earthquake. They stumble across Mirai Kusakabe. She then tries to help them survive this tragedy, and together they seek out their families. The series had 11 episodes, however, it took me a long time to finish it. The pace is really slow and makes you want to slow it down. However, when you get to the last 3 episodes, it’s worth the wait.

As the subject is traumatic in Japan due to the recurrence of these disasters there, it is interesting to find a work that speaks specifically about this, since it is a fact that many anime series or anime episodes have been banned for representing earthquakes (in Pokémon, for example, the “Earthquake” attack was banned in the first few seasons and was never used by any Pokémon again)

8.Plastic memories :

The story moves to the not too distant future, where human-looking androids begin to spread across the planet earth. The company that makes androids (SA corp), also created the giftia, a new model of androids that show feelings and even more, human qualities. However, androids have a life limit of 81,920 hours (nine years and four months); For this reason SA corp created the “End of service” section which recovers the androids that have already completed their life cycle. To carry out this work, Terminal Service employees work in teams consisting of a human being (called an “observer”) and a Giftia (called a “shooter”). The story centers on Mizukagi Tsukasa, a young man of 18 years,

7.Haibane Renmei

best sad anime

Born from a cocoon in the village of Old Home, a young Haibane—a being with a halo and small gray wings—awakens to a world she does not understand without memories of her past. Named Rakka for the dream of falling she had while inside the cocoon, she soon becomes accustomed to life in the strange town. However, there are strict rules for the Haibane, such as being forbidden to leave the village or go near the walls surrounding it. These, along with mysterious disappearances of their kind on their “Day of Flight,” begin to unsettle Rakka and the others since they know almost nothing about their own kind.

Haibane Renmei tells not only Rakka’s story but also of those around her, as they live their lives with no memories of the past while trying to break free from their former pain and ultimately find salvation.

6.Nana

best sad anime

The story follows the events of two twenty-year-old girls, Nana Komatsu and Nana Osaki, who share the same name and the same decision to move to Tokyo. The two young women take the same train to the Japanese capital, and that’s where they met. Separated at the station, Their paths will cross again when both find themselves looking for accommodation. Eventually, the girls decide to live in the same apartment. Despite being so different, these two women achieve an unlikely friendship in which music, romance and drama are mandatory parts of each episode.

From its opening, the music of ‘NaNa’ speaks to you with a lot of sadness and romance, achieving a gray atmosphere in which even love seems to be tinged with sadness. That is the main focus of the series that manages to present a series of relationships that not only show idealized love, but also focuses on topics such as infidelity or the need to abandon others to pursue personal goals. After you finish the anime we recommend that you follow the manga (which has been on hold since 2009) which is much more effective, even without a soundtrack.

5.Steins; Gate

best sad anime

Self-proclaimed mad scientist Rintarou Okabe rents a room in an old, dilapidated building in Akihabara where he feeds his hobby of inventing “future gadgets” with other members of his laboratory. Unintentionally, they create a microwave phone that sends emails to the past, altering the flow of time. However, they realize that messing with the timelines has its own consequences and must face them to return everything to normal.

Steins; Gate is a sad anime series that you can’t miss if you like series that include time travel. While this anime has a slow pace when it comes to history, it really pays off as you delve deeper into the story. If I want to describe this, I would say describe this as a mix of tragic romance with time travel, as it is the main premise. As the relationship flourishes between the characters who had unique personalities and are desperate to overcome obstacles. you start to love them more as the story continues.

Steins; Gate is not really classified as a “sad” anime, but its characters and situations have the power to bring us to tears.

3.Clannad After Story & 4.Clannad

best sad anime

The saddest anime in history? I Do not know. But certainly one of the most memorable and remembered in the “crying sad ” Anime lists. Clannad and its highly praised sequel  Clannad After Story are one of my favorite animes thanks to the plot that involves the genres drama, high school life, comedy, everyday life, romance and the supernatural. Unfortunately, Clannad was not very well received, the story seemed very cliché. However, at the end of the season, the anime takes entirely different directions from the beginning and that emotion remains strong throughout the second season, which has melted many hearts around the world. Anyway, I think Clannad is a really cool and fun anime, even in the beginning.

the story tells a depressed guy who attends a new high school and finds himself in a harem situation. This show really shines through its characters. They all have sad, realistic and sympathetic regrets. They begin to form strong relationships that help them to fix.

what is unique about Clannad is it follows its characters by cautious .you can see, They grow up. They are thrown aside for life. That’s right. Clannad, but mostly, Clannad: After Story explores the ups and downs of characters’ lives after high school. In particular, the growing relationship between the two very special characters that surely will melt your heart.

2.Your Lie in April

best sad anime

Have you ever imagined how intertwined music and love can be? Well, then  Shigatsu wa Kimi in Uso  , also known as  Your Lie in April, is certainly the anime for you! The show revolves around Kosei Arima, a child prodigy pianist raised strictly by his mother, who wanted to make him a reference. After her tragic death, the boy enters a defeatist and negative spiral that prevents him from getting close to living music again; The situation will turn around when he meets Kaori, a great violinist, cheeky, eccentric and happy, who will make him rise from his ashes.

Together, the two are inspired to become better versions of themselves and prolific musicians in this story of complicated feelings, situational confusions, jealousies, rivalries and lots and lots of music.

a lot can be said about this well-known work, masterfully animated by A-1 Pictures and whose soundtrack is a delight to the ears. If we add to the visual and sound wonder a faithful adaptation of the original manga, we have a highly recommended work that will shake your heart and transport you to a story full of truth, vitality and many emotions.

1.Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day

best sad anime

Ano Hana’, as it is known by fans, is the story of a group of friends who were separated by a tragedy: the death of one of their childhood friends. Years later, and when their paths seem to be completely separated, Jinta Yadomi whois now a teenager living a very normal life, meets the adult ghost of his dead friend Menma.
